How long does a UK grant application take?
There is no single wait. A short voucher can be days. A competition can be several months from the deadline to a decision, and the money can arrive later than the letter. The timetable is on the funder's page. Find Grants does not speed that up, and paying for a draft does not move you up a queue.

When should I start?
When the round is open and you can still do the work after a decision. Do not pay for a draft of a fund that has already closed.
Can I spend the money first and claim it back?
Only if that scheme says so. Many grants refuse costs you paid before the award. Read the eligible-cost rules before you buy anything.
